Post-Processing of AM Parts
Post-Processing of AM Parts
Additive manufacturing (AM)—the industrial term for 3D printing—is now widely known, highly significant, and
well-recognized for its ability to streamline the production
of geometrically complex parts and minimize waste.
However, AM is not perfect; parts often exhibit significant
surface finish issues when removed from the build
chamber or build plate. AM parts require preliminary postprocessing
to remove residual powder or physical
support structures, thereby improving their surface finish.
Wet blasting is particularly well suited for the finishing of
delicate, precision-produced and complex-shape parts,
which is perhaps the most important AM post processed
surface finish process.
Wet blasting cleans the 3D printed components by removing residual powder and significantly reduces their initial high surface roughness. It is capable of depowdering and providing general surface cleaning and initial surface smoothing from Ra 25 μm to 1–1.5 μm.
